Myrevisionplan Shockwave Flash project

MyRevisionPlan

MyRevisionPlan is an online revision planner for GCSE students, developed using Shockwave Flash and ASP.NET. The Shockwave Flash interface uses simple and intuitive drag and drop controls over ASP.NET code and a SQL database. It integrates with the schools' 'Capita Sims' admin system for automated data entry of student specific exams and features many user friendly, smart tools to help Students plan their revision effectively.

why shockwave flash?

Adobe's Shockwave player has been installed on over 450 million PCs and delivers some of the best the web has to offer including games, video, interactivity and online learning applications. But without support on Apple's ipads and iphones, careful consideration needs to be given to appropriateness and the target audience before adoption.

At bd2 we've used Adobe's Shockwave Flash [SWF] and Director programmes in our website and multimedia projects for over twelve years. SWF enables sophisticated multimedia experiences incorporating the smooth animation of vector graphics, video, audio and extensive user interactivity. A plugin is needed to play SWF files which can be downloaded for free, however it is preinstalled in most web browsers and currently over 99% now have the plugin installed according to an independent survey by Millward Brown. Historically, the need to download the plugin and the way Shockwave preloads complete sites or sections rather than downloading file by file like conventional pages, has created a perception - sometimes true - that sites built with Shockwave are slow and inaccessible. However, the spread of broadband and the adoption of the plugin has largely removed speed as an issue for using SWF.

That said, the very capabilities of the programme has perhaps led to some negativity through inappropriate, misguided use, bad-coding or poor design; we've all accessed sites with those annoying animated intro sequences which are slow to load and deliver very little; or sites with frustrating interfaces or controls which are all 'style over substance' and just create barriers to use.

It's also true to note that users who don't like SWF will avoid sites that use it which has to be born in mind when choosing it as a potential technology to use. While search engines have better support for Flash than they used to, it still can be very difficult to get an all-Flash website to rank highly in search engines. Most significantly, Flash isn't currently supported by Apple meaning that Flash sites or Flash elements won't work on ipads or iphones which all underlines the need for research into the target audience and need for an overall strategy before selecting this technology

our approach

We believe that the key question of when to use Shockwave is one of appropriateness. Using it for the sake of it generally results in a misconceived site, but when it is used appropriately SWF is an excellent tool which can deliver dynamic, functionally rich sites and an exciting user experience. So, whilst Flash is a powerful tool, it shouldn't be used to solve every situation; video and audio works well in Flash applications because it doesn't require another plugin like QuickTime or MediaPlayer, and it's excellent for building games.

At bd2 we've used Shockwave to create some successful sites and applications; our online game for American Golf and Adidas; microsites for Senator Sprint and Milliken Dreamscapes which deliver exciting presentations to support marketing campaigns; and, most recently, an online revision planner which uses a Flash interface over a SQL database to create a user-friendly site with 'drag and drop' controls.

We work within our own structured methodologies to ensure successful delivery of the projects we undertake proven within numerous case studies. We have a complete range of services from pre-project research, analysis and strategy development, through to interface design, development and testing on to post launch marketing, support and hosting services, please see:
