development process

We work hard with all our clients to gain clarity at the start of the project and continue to work with them throughout the project life to ensure they are kept up to date on progress and fully involved throughout the project. We have a long established track record of project planning and management working within our own structured processes.

pre-project

There are many reasons why your organisation has decided to consider a new web development project; proactive market analysis; cost led market push; competitors; technological developments; and strategic business factors are all triggers for action. Understanding and defining those needs is vital if an appropriate service provider, who can meet all your requirements, is to be sourced. Similarly, a carefully selected project manager, or team, with the authority, resources and clear remit to work with that service provider is no less essential if a successful outcome to the project is to be achieved.

We believe that any individual web development project should be the implementation within all or part of an overall e-strategy to ensure success. The constantly evolving digital world places heavy emphasis on devising and refining an effective and coordinated 'e-strategy' that's fully aligned with your business objectives, overall marketing strategies and brand. Most importantly, it has to consider, and research as required, each potential activity in relation to the specific target audience. Please see:

e-strategy >

Stage 1: exploration

A thorough planning and pre-briefing process will ultimately benefit the project and bring clarity to all your objectives and requirements. Within an 'exploration workshop' our consultant, developers and art director will discuss and evaluate project objectives, targets, messages, timescales, budgets, resources, explore future possibilities and assess risks within a workshop framework. The workshop will also consider [supported by further research as required] the context of the target audience in terms of functionality, technology, content, needs and profile them and their use. What do they want and expect from the site? Finally, we will conduct a review of your competitors and associates as well as best practice examples and your preferences.

Stage 2: definition

Based on the information gathered within the exploration workshop and in any relevant research, we will create a project plan defining all aspects of the project. We will devise a site map to formalise the overall structure and navigation of the site and an active site map to demonstrate how the dynamic elements of the site will work which are defined in more detail within a series of 'active multi-paths' - the various routes open to users. The project plan will incorporate a schedule indicating the timescales of all design and development tasks as well as various content collation and provision needs. Finally, based on the site maps and models proposed, a definitive costing will be provided [this may be subject to change if any major revisions are required]. With the project plan agreed, the first 'key approval point' has been achieved - these points are critical as subsequent changes may involve re-working and additional development costs.

Stage 3: realisation

Based on the outcomes of the exploration workshop, now defined in an approved project plan, we will create initial concepts for the graphic look and feel [incorporating any branding issues as defined within your corporate guidelines and all aspects of the creative brief] with storyboards. We will present and review the various concepts for look and feel, consider the database structure and any data implications and the multi-path walkthroughs. The final outcomes will be reached by a process of reviewing and refining the concepts until key approval is gained. These ideas can be tested within the project management team, focus groups or through market research and may require the approval of the board of directors, commitees or external regulatory bodies.

Stage 4: creation

Working to the project plan and the approved initial development work, we will address all relevant production issues, liaison with all internal and external parties and any service providers following an agreed approval and sign off procedure. The development process will encompass; the creation of graphic content; coding of web pages, style sheets and templates; site building [linking all pages and sections]; programming; configuring the site with relevant servers; and possibly integration with other client systems. This work will be uploaded to our test site to allow the client to review work in progress and to test the site's performance in relation to the brief. Signed-off final content is to be provided according to the schedule.

Stage 5: implementation

With the site fully developed, a process of thorough testing by ourselves, the client and beta testing by various user groups as required. Their feedback can be audited and any refinements made before the formal implementation. Ongoing maintenance, technical support, content management procedures and any relevant e-marketing campaigns will be agreed and defined within a support contract to protect and enhance the investment made during the site's development. Reviews, statistical reports, analytics and user feedback should be collated and evaluated to enhance the site where possible.
